Let’s talk music.
I have been wanting to write something on the subject ever since I started this site a few months ago. I have been putting it off for some reason but this morning I could put it off no longer. I saw something so unbelievably stupid on TV the other day that I leapt to my feet, grabbed the laptop, and started typing. My muse had arrived, sort of speak. On the Today show, which is a complete joke of a news program now, was the current YouTube sensation Ylvis—obviously a play on Elvis—singing their hit song “What The Fox Say”. I don’t know if you have heard this song or not, I assume that you have since it’s such a “sensation”, but it is incredibly awful. I mean terrible. Now I will admit that I’m not a big fan of the Top 40 radio of today, but this shit is just ridiculous. This is beyond the normal Top 40 bland dance pop. Actually it’s almost just plain offensive that something like this God awful bullshit gets any kind of publicity at all. Somehow, and I truly cannot see how, this song, if you can even call it a song, has gotten millions of views on YouTube. It’s like the new “Gangnam Style”—and we all know how terrible that was. What is it about completely ridiculous shit like this that people seem to go crazy for? You know I’m starting to wonder if YouTube is becoming just plain dangerous to society. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great site in a lot of ways. You can see interviews, and speeches, and music that you never would have been able to see before. Want to see George Harrison and Paul Simon singing “Here Comes The Sun” on Saturday Night Live back in the 1970′s? It’s literally a click away. But is this the price we have to pay? To have some dumbass with zero talent make a video on YouTube and get more exposure that anyone else more deserving? According to the news last week there is even a YouTube awards show in the works. As if the Grammy’s and the VMA’s weren’t bad enough, now YouTube gets a show? I cannot even imagine how outright mentally defective that is going to be. You know what is the saddest thing is there are so many really, truly talented people out there. A lot of them are at the local bar, or in the corner cafe, or even on YouTube, but you never get to hear about them. They don’t get the respect. For some reason, we don’t put them on the Today show. We put Ylvis on there instead. Are we evolving backwards or something?
Let’s face facts, music has been really going downhill, at least from a commercial pop perspective, for a long, long time. My generation, the children of the late 80′s and beyond, has really seen a decline that is just depressing. I mean just think about who the last great bands really were. Nirvana? Radiohead? REM? U2? I know that some of them still make music, but their best days were 20 years ago or more. Has there been anything else to compare to those bands since? Hell no there hasn’t. I mean Red Hot Chili Peppers or Dave Matthews Band just do not stack up. Dave Matthews Band isn’t even really music, it’s like a shameful phase everyone goes through in high school on the journey to discovering real music. And the sad part is that all of those great bands I just listed don’t even compare with the bands that came before them. I mean they certainly aren’t The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, Talking Heads, Ramones, Pink Floyd. You get the idea… Ever since the sixties rock n’ roll has been dying. It’s been a slow, painful death. When you turned on the radio back in the era of your parents you would probably hear “Seventeen” by Janis Ian, or maybe “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel was the new hit out at the moment. All in all, pretty great stuff. Now flash forward to my generation. If you turned on the radio when I was growing up you heard “Bye Bye Bye” by N’SYNC, or “Barbie Girl” by whoever the fuck that shit was by. You probably get the point.
Let’s put things in perspective this way. Let’s see how the music stacked up exactly forty years ago…
1973 was a pretty great year for music. In 1973 George Harrison released his album ‘Living In The Material World’. Stevie Wonder’s ‘Innervisions’ came out. Pink Floyd put out the epic ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ album. Led Zeppelin put out ‘Houses Of The Holy’. Some artists even managed to put out not just one, but two great albums that year. Elton John’s ‘Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player’ and ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ both came out in 73′. Paul McCartney and Wings put out ‘Red Rose Speedway’ in the spring and then ‘Band On The Run’ that December. David Bowie had ‘Aladdin Sane’ and ‘Pin Ups’. All pretty great albums, some even considered to be some of the greatest ever made. True works of art. Now these were of course by veteran artists so let’s have a look at the newcomers as well. The new artists of 1973 weren’t too shabby. The band America won the Grammy for best new artist. The runners up included The Eagles and Harry Chapin. You know ol’ Harry Chapin right? “Cat’s in the cradle with the silver spoon?” Ah yeah… you know. Hell, even Skynard’s “FreeBird” made it’s debut in 73′… Now flashforward to 2013. What albums do the masses have to look forward to this year? I’ll tell you what they have to look forward to… albums like Katy Perry’s ‘Prism’. John Mayer’s ‘Paradise Valley’. Miley Cyrus’s ‘Bangerz’. Lady Gaga’s ‘ArtPop’. Do you get my drift? I mean talk about a bunch of rejects. No wonder album sales are declining, the albums aren’t worth buying. So what about the newcomers? The 2013 best new artist Grammy went to the band Fun. and one of the runners up was Hunter Hayes. Yikes. I mean, talk about a downgrade. I know Harry Chapin is no John Lennon, but at least he wrote one, maybe two memorable great songs. There was a decent band nominated called the Alabama Shakes, but of course they didn’t win and they don’t get radio play either. Now I know all you hipsters out there will say “Dude there is plenty of good music out there, you just gotta look for it. Help yourself to a fucking My Morning Jacket album.” I agree with you Dr. Pabst. But that’s kinda my point. In 1973 you didn’t have to be a detective to find good music. ‘Band On The Run’ was a #1 album with huge hit singles. It was everywhere. You couldn’t not know it. I know there are great bands out there today, but you’re not going to hear them on the radio, or see them in magazines or especially TV. I know that has its own allure to many of you—There’s mystery to these unknown, underground bands that are all yours and no one else’s. I get it, but it shouldn’t have to be that way. It should be easy to hear Grimes or Devendra Banhart on the mainstream radio, and find their albums in Walmart. Vice versa, it should be almost impossible to find a copy of Taylor Swift’s ‘Red’. You really shouldn’t even know who she is. But you do. Everyone does, and nobody knows who Laura Stevenson and The Cans are. How sad. Do yourself a favor and YouTube them for a change, instead of watching “What The Fox Say” for the 300th time. Now I know I picked on 1973 but you could do literally any year you wanted. In 1963 The Beatles first album ‘Please Please Me’ came out. In 1983 Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller” was released and still holds the record for biggest selling album of all time. Hell, even as late as 1993 we had ‘In Utero’ by Nirvana. Now every once in awhile there is the rare gem that comes out and gets both commercial success and accolades and still manages to be a great work of art. ‘Back To Black’ by Amy Winehouse is a perfect example. But we shouldn’t have to suffer through all the mindless nonsense to get an Amy Winehouse to come along once a decade.
I know this post has been one big, fat, depressing rant but here’s just one more nail in the coffin for you. All of the greatest music artists of all time—that are still alive today—the Paul McCartneys, the Dylans, The Brian Wilsons, Eric Claptons, Elton Johns, Stones, Eagles, Fleetwood Macs, Zeppelin, The Who, etc, etc—they will all probably be either too old to perform and create or outright dead within the next 15-20 years. By the time I am in my forties an era will officially be gone. If you ever wanna turn on the TV and see someone singing “Yesterday” or “Hey Jude” you’ll have to settle for seeing someone like Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars—And hell, by then even they will be considered ancient. Who knows what kind of terrible music there will be by then. God it’s a scary thought.
Let’s make a deal right now. Let’s all stop with the Bieber fever. Let’s stop with the American Idol/Voice bullshit. Let’s stop with the YouTube insanity, and let’s put all of our focus on some band or artist that actually wears clothes and plays a real instrument and writes a real song about something other than ‘homegirls’ and partying.
Ah… God I must just be getting old. This is probably exactly what someone wrote bitching about Elvis back in 1956—
“Back in 1906 things were so much better than this Elvis shit!”
“NO TEMPTATION HAS OVERTAKEN YOU THAT IS NOT COMMON TO MAN.GOD IS FAITHFUL AND HE WILL NOT LET YOU BE TEMPTED BEYOND YOU ABILITY, BUT WITH TEMTATION HE WILL PROVIDE YOU THE WAY OF ESCAPE, THAT YOU MAY BE ABLE TO ENDURE IT.” 1 CORINTHIANS 10:13″
Hello my little ponies. As you may have noticed I did not write last week. In all honesty I have had so much going on inside me I did not know how to get it all down on paper . ( or computer screen).Every time I thought about what I wanted to write I would think ” OMG there is so much I want to let out , how can they expect me to write just a few paragraphs?” But then when I got home today I was researching some stuff online and I ran across the verse at the top of the page and it brought peace to my racing mind. It helped me realize what was not only in my head but on my heart.
In our everyday lives we are tempted with so many things whether it is to lie, cheat , steal, or lust, temptation it is a common thing. Something we must all understand is that we will all be tempted and we all will fail. The sooner you except this the better. I have had my fair share of these failures of withstanding temptation. ..yes even me, shocking I know…and quite honestly it sucks. These failures leave you in this place of sadness and self doubt. You think to yourself “how could I have done that” or ” what was I thinking, how am I going to explain this to people?” It is a paralyzing feeling. Then of course a lot of times these temptations may involve another person or another factor and you become angry at these things. You may feel as though they have personally led you to this failure from the beginning. You start to blame them and let me be the first to tell you the longer you hold onto all the anger, the blame, the self criticism, the longer you will be considered a failure. I am going to share a saying with you little ponies that you have probably heard a thousand times . HE WILL NOT BRING YOU TO IT IF HE CAN NOT BRING YOU THROUGH IT. I think this saying is a more condensed way of translating to us what 1 Corinthians is telling us. These Temptations are common thing , that does not make them right, it just unfortunately makes them common. We may not be faithful to the Lord at all times but he is always faithful to us and he knows the temptations we face. There will never come a time when he does not provide a way of escape from these temptations along with the faith and spirit to endure the consequences of our actions.
Now lets look at the flip side of this. You didn’t think you were getting off that easy did you? As sinners we are forgiven when we ask for forgiveness. This does not excuse our behavior or our reactions. We are all still responsible for our own actions and reactions. Earlier I expressed that you may feel like a curtain circumstance or person led you to these failures so we want to blame them. We can not blame someone else for our actions. This takes a lot of faith and trust, believe me I have been there. Someone does something to you and you want so bad to just tell them off or seek revenge and we justify this because we feel wronged. But that is not what the Bible calls us to do. whether someone you loved walked out of your life or someone wronged you in ways that no one can comprehend we must learn to forgive and react in a forgiving way, because the Lord forgives us daily .
MARK 12:25 “AND WHENEVER YOU STAND PRAYING, FORGIVE,IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST ANYONE,SO THAT YOUR FATHER ALSO WHO IS IN HEAVEN MAY FORGIVE YOU YOUR SINS.”
That is it for tonight my little ponies , I hope you have enjoyed . Please feel free to leave comments whether you agree or not, this is for all so I would love to know your thoughts. Also remember to become Facebook official with us so you will receive notifications of new postings!
In case you haven’t noticed, which I’m sure you haven’t, I have not written anything for a bit. Nearly two weeks I think. I have somehow managed to come down with a case of the shingles at the oh-so-young age of 25. How this could have happened I really don’t know. Twenty five is about thirty years too young to even start thinking about having shingles. It has been every bit the nightmare that people have made it out to be. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s not like having meningitis or something, but it’s very painful and seems to last forever. It’s been nearly two weeks of having it and I am just about ready to take a razor blade to the top layer of my skin. It started out as a pain, which I assumed was a muscle pain, on the back left side of my neck. It was uncomfortable, but bearable. The pain gradually got worse over the next couple of days, eventually radiating down to my shoulder. My skin also began to get very sensitive. I have not been able to wear a seat belt correctly for over a week. It was very painful to have even so much as my shirt on for a few days. I went to the doctor for the first time and was told that it was a simple case of muscle soreness. I was relieved and went on my way applying ice and heat and hoping for the best. A few days later I started to have hard bumps coming up on the back of my head under my hair. Then a rash started to appear on my neck. Now I was in full hypochondriac hysteria. I rushed back to the doctor (a different doctor) and was told I had shingles. They were pretty shocked too. Like I said, you don’t usually see anyone under 50 with it. They asked if I had been stressed out lately, I told them I had been very stressed in the days leading up to when the pain first began, and they said that may have triggered it. It’s been over a week now of the rash and the pain but things seem to be getting a little better. I am hoping the worst is behind me. For some reason I haven’t felt as good today as I have the previous few days, I’m hoping it’s just psychosomatic and not some kind of setback.
Let’s have a brief overview of Shingles, shall we? Shingles is essentially the chickenpox virus reemerging inside of you to wreak havoc on a particular nerve path. When you get the virus that causes chickenpox, usually as a child, the virus never fully goes away. It lays dormant. Most people have the good fortune of never dealing with it again. For some though, it can come back as a condition called shingles. Shingles is basically the virus infecting a particular nerve path extending out from some part of the spine. It is for this reason that shingles always occurs on one side of the body. As the nerve first becomes infected there is pain and inflammation, followed by skin sensitivity. The pain can range from mild to excruciating. Thankfully I think, although it was very painful, I managed to have a rather mild case. The rash begins after a few days and follows along the path of the nerve. If the case is severe enough, the rash can turn into blisters that are very painful and eventually burst and scab over. A lovely thought, right? Even after the rash clears up, which can take 1 to 3 weeks, the pain can persist for another month or two.
So that is how much fun I am having right now. I sometimes wonder if there is a rise in the number of shingles cases in the ”under 50″ crowd. I think maybe the current horrible job market and all the surrounding negativity and paranoia certainly could cause that to happen. I am someone who constantly worries and stays stressed out. Anxiety has become a way of life. But let this be a lesson to you kids. Try not to stress so much, it really does more harm to you than just about anything else. I wish I could change, and maybe one day I will be able to—But for right now I just have to maintain and try to keep a level head.
